At first glance, giving a report on the history of semiotic studies in Korea may not seem very challenging because modern Korean semiotics does not have a long history. Nevertheless, in trying to summarize the present state of semiotic re-search in Korea, one runs a certain risk: Since semiotics is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of culture, it is difficult to distinguish its subject matter from that of other cultural sciences. The boundaries of semiotics appear fluent and whoever wants to specify them in a concept-based way must avoid the danger of imposing in-adequate restrictions on the practice of semiotic research. It is certain, however, that semiotics is the science of signs and sign processes and should study all areas of cultural life from this perspective. This is shown by means of central examples from actual semiotic research in Korea.Zusammenfassung. Multiple codes of living space appear in the Dosan-Seowon (‘Dosan academy’) which served as Confucian academy and shrine in the Joseon-Dynasty (1392–1910). Baesanimsu (‘Mountain behind you, river in front of you’) is the key concept for the architecture of traditional Korean houses. According to this concept, if there is a mountain in the back and water in front, the site is an ideal place to build a house. As the concept shows, the surrounding space is more important than the house itself in traditional Korean housing. But the space code of baesanimsu is not limited to the orientation between water and mountain, it encompasses the complex binary code of front/back, verticality/horizontality, and mobility/immobility. The houses themselves, both for the living and the dead, had to be built after the Chinese topologic concept pungsu (chin. peng-xu: ‘wind and water’). It transpires that understanding traditional Korean architecture requires a semiotic approach that emphasizes relationalism rather than substantialism.Zusammenfassung. Subject matter is often taken from old myths and well-known folk tales, for example the famous love-story of Chunhyang. These themes are expressed in a lyrical language which combines metaphor and metonymy in complex structures. The present paper analyzes the metaphorical structure of two poems, making use of Benjamin Hrushovski’s reference frame theory.Zusammenfassung. The traditional Korean ritual Gut (a shaman ritual) contains four steps: Cheongsin (‘invitation of the gods’), Osin (‘festival’), Sinui-Cheongchui (‘hearing the message of the gods’), and Songsin (‘farewell to the gods’). Osin can be considered the origin of Korean theater. In the Gut ritual, the invited Gods are gratified through singing and dancing and then asked to fulfill the wishes of man. There are several variations of Gut. One of them is the Ogu-Gut – originally a ritual in which the living call the Ogu-King from the other world and ask him to guide the souls of the dead to the world of Nirvana.Zusammenfassung. The term “Dokkaebi” is a generic name, but appears as a proper name in stories, where individual Dokkaebis never have individual names: This points to the ambivalence of the Dokkaebi figure which combines generality with individuality. Dokkaebis in talismans or tiles manifest ambivalence in appearing dreadful and ridiculous at the same time. Dokkaebis occurring in stories personify their own genesis: Dokkaebi semiosis. The question of how the Dokkaebi is generated is here treated from a semiotic position opposed to historical or psychological determinism.Zusammenfassung. The descriptive apparatus includes the feature hierarchy of gustemes, the morphology of meals, the reality model applied to the ingredients, their recipe-dependent collocations, the kinemics of food preparation and consumption, the proxemics of the table companions, the semiotic square of eater types, and the food-related figuration of culturemes. The syncretisms in the kitchen of all societies, which are becoming increasingly obvious in the age of globalization, are to be systematically described and explained by the equally syncretistic discipline of culinary studies (culinaristics) which reformulates the relevant contributions of all sciences and connects them into a unified approach.Zusammenfassung. In terms of text science and semiotics, the phenomenon of intermediality needs careful investigation, since it has led to a fundamental transformation of traditional notions concerning text and sign. Intermediality has a long history in Eastern and Western civilizations, the introduction of electronic and digital media which integrate text, image, video, and sound have enormously expanded the possibilities and made intermediality a ubiquitous phenomenon. At the same time, there is no systematic definition of this notion which integrates the diverse disciplines in which it occurs. In this paper, a syncretistic semiotic perspective is adopted following Émile Benveniste to explore the aspects of interaction, juxtaposition, and fusion of image and text in relation to intermediality. For this purpose, two media-theories are used which propose to be relevant to the perspective of syncretistic semiotics: teletheory (Gregory Ulmer) and the theory of remediation (Jay D. Bolter).Zusammenfassung. The present contribution utilizes the fact that the functioning of Hangul was explicitly explained by its inventors in the book “Hun-minjeongeu” to answer the more general question of why the history of scripts in the six thousand years shows a clear tendency towards replacing pictogram scripts by phonogram scripts, as is also manifested in the evolution of alphabetic scripts.Zusammenfassung.
